If grandparents and other relatives don’t unite to fight for help, we will never get it.  It is tough for grandparents living on social security or those who work and have to pay for daycare.  Many grand-families live below the poverty line and scratching to provide for the children they raise.

States save money when they don’t pay relative caregivers as foster families.  But one state finally realized that these caregivers are in desperate need.

If your state doesn’t have kinship care, or whatever it is called where you live, you should support those who are campaigning for it.  States are moving toward this, but not all states have it.

An excellent source of information is Grandfamilies.org.  Go to   http://www.grandfamilies.org/State-Fact-Sheet and click on your state. This website says that thirty-four states have authorized GAP (Grandparents as Parents) monthly payments.

The thirty-four states are:
Alabama
Alaska
Arkansas
California
Colorado
Connecticut
Hawaii
Idaho
Illinois
Indiana
Louisiana
Maine
Maryland
Massachusetts
Michigan
Minnesota
Missouri
Montana
Nebraska
Nevada
New Jersey
New Mexico
New York
Oklahoma
Oregon
Pennsylvania
Rhode Island
South Dakota
Tennessee
Texas
Vermont
Washington
West Virginia
Wisconsin

If you do not find your state here, it doesn’t have GAP payments.  We need this in ALL states!
Consider helping to get laws passed to help out these families.  They save the state the full cost of supporting these children.
