Things Nobody Told You About Raising Your Grandchildren

Raising a child is challenging.  Raising our grandchildren is a daunting challenge.  Let’s look at some things nobody ever told you about raising your grandchildren.  In future posts, I will try to give suggestions for dealing with these challenges.

Remember that there is no one solution for any problem.  You have to consider the options and see which ones will work for you.

  1.  First, there is the issue of getting into this situation only to realize at some point that it is A LOT to handle.  Do you feel resentment, anger, or sadness?  You aren’t alone!  Most of us have been there.  Make sure you don’t transfer these feelings to the child.  He had nothing to do with it.  Realize that you made a commitment.  Look at the rewards.  Isn’t that smile worth it all?  Even if it is an occasional smile, such as with a teenager?
  2.  There is the financial burden that you hadn’t expected to deal with at this point in your life.  There may be some help for that.  Raising children at a later age affects your health.  Whether or not you realize it at first, the demands push you to the limits physically at times.

  4.  There may be housing conditions to deal with.  If you have downsized as you got older, where are you going to put this child (or these children)?
  5.  There is an emotional challenge when raising a child while dealing with the parents’ shortcomings  You may be very disappointed, angry, or sad about what your children have done.  You have to deal with that while trying to stay positive for the child’s sake.
  6.  You will most likely experience social isolation.  Most of your friends who are empty nesters and have the freedom to do things you can’t because you have to consider the child.

There may be other issues I overlooked here.  Please feel free to contact me with other issues you deal with and I will try to include them.

Now, see the new posts as I try to explore these things affecting our lives and offer suggestions for dealing with them.
